Digital  Elevation  Models (DEMs)

Updated 5 January 2003

Locate DEMs of USGS topographic quadrangles for Nevada on a clickable map or identify by quad name, then download zipped DEM images, header files, and metadata.  Select either 1:100,000 or 1:24,000 scale quads.  California DEMs are available from Humboldt State University.  DEM files can be imported directly into ArcView configured with the Spatial Analyst extension.  Please note that this database is not complete.  DEMs not available on Keck may be downloaded from geo-community (free) or purchased from the USGS

About DEMs
A digital elevation model (DEM) is a digital file consisting of terrain elevations for ground positions at regularly spaced horizontal intervals. The USGS produces five different digital elevation products. Although all are identical in the manner the data are structured, each varies in sampling interval, geographic reference system, areas of coverage, and accuracy; with the primary differing characteristic being the spacing, or sampling interval, of the data. The USGS provides a free 3-D viewer you may download.  For more information on DRGs go to the USGS DEM home page.

The mission of the W. M. Keck Earth Sciences and Mining Research Information Center is to provide access for researchers, both on-site and from their remote desktops, to specialized bibliographic databases, scientific visualization and modeling packages, and geospatial data resources.
